One Year Stroke Anniversary

One year ago today I had a stroke. I will never forget that day, that scary feeling that I could die, imagining how my family would deal with my loss... yes it was pretty fucking scary.

It's good to be here one year later. We had quite a party last night with 40 or so friends and family members. Most of us drank too much and ate too much cheese too. We served salad and had plenty of healthy snacks - I'm pretty sure I ate healthy, right? And red wine is good for you but I think the recommended dose for men is two glasses per day, not ten glasses at one party - I guess you could say it was only five glasses per day counting both Saturday and Sunday since were up well past midnight.

I had an awesome bike ride yesterday morning. 44 miles with a few rolling hills. I pushed it to the max most of the time. Damn it felt good. I averaged around 22 miles an hour most of the time. I was on my standard road bike and stayed mostly in what I call my "aero position" with my hands on the top of the brake hoods, arms parallel to the ground and body low, with occasional drooling letting me know I'm working hard.

At The Top of Dairy Creek

Planning to run trails today. Starting at Wildwood and 53rd and heading North. It will be awesome that's for sure. We've got light rain here in Portland today so the trails should be perfect.

One year anniversaries require goal setting, right? Yes, of course they do, Steve. And yes Steve, you are still too fat and too slow. I've been thinking a lot lately about my weight and how I really need an event to help me focus, train consistently, eat better, get faster and lose a few pounds. I'm a goal-oriented guy and that's how I roll. I was thinking would run a marathon this Fall but I've decided instead to do a triathlon. I am going to start with an Olympic distance event with the "goal" of doing a half ironman as soon as I am ready.

So that's the one year report. All good. New goals. Lovin' Life!

Ahhh, It's Nice to be Fast and Injury Free

I haven't posted since December. Sorry. Today I finally ran another Claremont Standard and set a new PR by 11 seconds. Finally. After running a half marathon in December - embarrassingly slow - and battling  numerous calf strains, hamstring pulls and hip flexor pulls, I can finally run without pain again. Sucks to get old, huh?

Generally, I feel great. I haven't lost much weight but I think I've gained some muscle over the last six months. Summer is almost here and I'm planning to do a lot of cycling which will most certainly help me lose a few more pounds.

Maybe I'll run the Starlight run this year - always a blast. Hood to Coast is out since I don't want to miss my kids' football scrimmage weekend. But there are a ton of awesome running events around Portland this Summer so I'll certainly pick a few races and keep pushing to get faster.

My training program is currently 2-3 times per week on the bike, 1-2 runs per week, and 1-2 weight sessions per week. I find it very difficult to lift indoors on beautiful summer days - so I don't.

Here's to a great Summer! Enjoy the great weather and don't get trapped indoors when you should be out there on your bike, walking or running, playing tennis or generally carousing around the neighborhood.
